UAB Comprehensive Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic

The UAB Comprehensive Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic cares for an average of 3,800 patients annually, making it one of the busiest of its kind in the country. Located within the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, the clinic specializes in the full range of neurological disorders that affect movement, including Parkinson's disease and other Parkinsonian disorders. UAB offers the depth and expertise to work with complex cases and provide advanced therapies, patient education, and support.

PAA Emeritas Director Ken Cater and UAB Director of Neurology Dr. David G. Standaert review research efforts underway at the UAB Comprehensive Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic.

Their neurologists have repeatedly been named among the top doctors in the United States. Along with comprehensive diagnostic services, they utilize the latest treatment approaches including medications, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, deep brain stimulation surgery, neuropsychological evaluations and treatment, and clinical trials designed to test new medical and surgical therapies, including "neuroprotective therapies" for Parkinson's disease.

David Standaert, MD, PhD has served as the John N. Whitaker Professor and Chair for the Department of Neurology at UAB since 2010. He is also the Director of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Center for Advanced Research and Chair of the APDA Scientific Advisory Board. He is an international leader in Parkinson's disease. Additionally, Dr. Standaert is well connected with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and has received numerous research grants for his team of researchers. He sees many patients in a weekly clinic and oversees many clinical trials for new treatments in Parkinson's disease.

UAB is one of five Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence nationally, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The UAB program includes many studies and trials of new medications and treatments, and at any given time there are more than one dozen open clinical trials patients can join. Some trials are for certain stages of the disease while others are open to all, so there is something for everyone interested in participation and access to the latest science in the field.
